MBL Society member Rita Colwell, a world-renown microbiologist, will receive one of the top awards in science and technology, the 2017 Vannevar Bush Award. Colwell is a member of the MBL President’s Scientific Advisory Council, a former MBL Trustee (2012-2015), and she served on the faculty of the MBL Microbiology course (now Microbial Diversity) in 1984.

The National Science Board (NSB) is pleased to announce that Rita Rossi Colwell, distinguished university professor at the University of Maryland College Park and at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, senior advisor and chairman emeritus at Canon U.S. Life Sciences, Inc., and founder and chairman at CosmosID, Inc., will receive the 2017 Vannevar Bush Award.

The Vannevar Bush Award honors truly exceptional lifelong leaders in science and technology who have made substantial contributions to the welfare of the nation through public service activities in science, technology, and public policy. Colwell, whose work bridges many areas, including microbiology, ecology, infectious disease, public health, and computer and satellite technology, is recognized for her significant, life-saving contributions in the areas of global infectious diseases, water, and health.
