I spent the summer before college graduation mastering a fancy scientific instrument: a plastic beaker duct-taped to the end of a wooden stick.

Even among the geeky summer crowds that flock to Woods Hole, MA, a delightful hybrid of beachside town and global nexus of marine science, the five of us in my field team must have cut an odd figure.
